Summer is a wonderful time just to take off and get away any chance you can. You don't have to go far from home to get
a little break from the usual.
All of you who know me, won't be surprised when I tell you that when I travel, I refuse to return the same route as I went.
I figure that I saw what one way had to offer and I might be missing something if I travel home the same way. Well, such a
trip is what inspired this newsletter...
My husband (Big Dave) and I had a chance to get away for a couple of days during the week of the 4th. Well, this was a
last minute trip, so I just got on the phone and found the first place that had something available for the days we had. We
wound up in Douthat State Park (near Clifton Forge, VA). It was gorgeous and very relaxing. We stayed in a little cabin in
the woods and it was wonderful.
On the way home, I had navigated our route to go through the small town of Eagle Rock, VA. We stopped for lunch at Maw
and Paw's Diner - they had Fried Bologna Sandwiches, Liver & Onions and something called Peg Legs on the menu. Well, I
had to ask about the Peg Legs and found that's just a really cute name for chicken drummets! For dessert, the handwritten
sign said they offered Blackberry Cobbler and Apple Dumblins. (That's what the sign said.) It made me glad that we had stopped
at such a wonderful place - full of character! Of course, George Jones, Dolly Parton and Hank Jr. were playing on the radio...that
just added to the whole atmosphere. I'd like to say "Thank you, Maw & Paw for preserving the traditional diner for all
to share!".
We also stopped at every produce stand from here to there. I stumbled upon a special place where I made lots of instant
friends. I can't say enough about this great stop. Foster's Greenhouse & Country Market at 17175 Virgil Goode Hwy. (HWY
220) Rocky Mount, VA is the best produce, etc. shop I've ever found! Of course, they have all kinds of produce, but I was
most excited about the spices, hand dipped candies, dried beans of all kinds, and flour & corn meal that came straight
from the mill. I could have spent the day with the Foster family (that owns and runs the store) - they took me in like I was
family and told me about all of their favorite products. Need some country bacon to cook in your beans...they have it! Need
some maple flavoring...they have it! Want an easy pie filling...they have it! These ladies know their stuff and are more than
happy to share with you. I know that I'll be back again and again. If you want to drop by, tell them I said "Hey!". You'll
probably see a few of the Foster family -Ann, Bill, Nancy or Connie. Or maybe Lenora... they said she's not family but she's
a sweet lady! Here's their number if you need it 540-483-5792.
I know all of these stops may seem silly to some, but to me, they are what make the trip complete! I love meeting folks
everywhere I go and it's always so comforting to feel welcomed even when you're somewhere you've never been.
I encourage you to enjoy the small stops in life!
Travel safely, happy & healthy!

This is from my monthly newsletter...to recieve the recipes that I use on my radio show, send me your email
address and I'll send them to you.
June 30, 2007
Well y'all, summer is upon us and your either loving it or hating it! I love having the kids out of school and not having
to be on the run so early everyday and I like warm weather (over cold!), but it could be a little cooler - don't you think?
I've just returned from being a judge for the recipe contest at the NC Blueberry Festival. I sampled lots of great dishes
- it's harder than you might think to say which is the best when you have so many delicious things to choose from.
I've been busy with not 1, but 2 new books! I'm hoping to have them in before the fall for the holiday season. I might
have told you before, that I've been working on a book which includes the recipes from my radio cooking show "Cooking with
Lisa". The book title is Cooking with Lisa: Kick Off Your Shoes & Let's Get Cookin' and it has 400 recipes (recipes from
the show, my jam & jelly recipes and lots of great recipes for everyday cooking!). It has everything from No-Fry Country
Style Steak, Microwave Mac n' Cheese to 2 Ingredient Peanut Butter Fudge. I've been working on this book since 2005 and I
think you're gonna love it!
My other book is (Your Child's Name Here) Cookbook. It has 100 fun to cook and
eat recipes for children of all ages. The book will have a blank for your child’s name to be written on the cover so
they will feel like the book was written just for them. I believe that learning to cook is a gift that can be received at
any age! This book has been so much fun to write and test. Both books will be in soon - I'll let you know once they are here.
To those of you who have my "Fat Little Crockin' Cookbook", please take a minute to go to page 174 (Waikiki Chicken). I
need to let everyone know that the pineapple chunks are supposed to be added with the green pepper, onion and 1/2 cup of the
pineapple juice. I have corrected that in the newer books, but I did want to clear that up.
Thought for the month...so many things in life can be hard to handle. Don't feel like you have to face them all alone.
Our minds and bodies weren't built to fix every problem. God wants us to hand over our problems to him and trust that He will
either change what's wrong or give us the strength to get through it.
I pray that you have a fun and safe July 4th!
Don't eat too many hot dogs and don't get crazy with the firecrackers!
Happy Cooking!

June 20, 2007
It's hard to believe that I first started my "With Love, Lisa" page one year
ago. The first entry I wrote was after the NC Blueberry Festival and I'm on my way there soon to judge the recipe
contest again this year. If you are nearby...drop by and say "Hey!". There will be lots of good food, vendors
of all types and of course, blueberries! This is a nice show in Burgaw, NC on June 23. Burgaw is right off
of I-40 on the way to Wilmington. For more information, check out www.ncblueberryfestival.com/ .
I've lost count of how many folks are recieving my monthly newsletters, but it's a lot!
It has become one of my favorite parts of what I do. So many people email me after recieving their newsletter and let
me know how they're doing or what they've been cooking! And you know, I love that! It really has become a great
way for us all to keep in touch with each other. Please keep the emails coming...I love to hear from you!
Well, better run. Y'all Take Care!

Can you believe it's almost June? I don't know where the time has gone, but it's been
flying! Remember when we were younger and it felt like forever waiting on Christmas...and then for school to be out
for the summer? Me, too! My birthday is Sunday and every year I think "I can't be that age! Not me...I'm
still 20-something in my head, but my body says differently!" Time just seems to go way too fast!
I've been busy with my latest cookbook "Cooking with Lisa". It
will have all of the recipes that I used the first year of my radio show, lots of new favorites for y'all and all of my jam
and jelly recipes. (Some of you may know me as "The Jelly Lady" at the Greensboro Farmers' Curb Market...I don't have
a chance to make jelly like I used to, so I'm sharing all of my jelly recipes in this book.) It has 400 recipes
in total and I can't wait for you to see it! I'll be sending a note to let you know when the book is available.
I'll be a judge for the NC Blueberry Festival on June 23 in Burgaw, NC
(it's right off of I-40 on the way to Wilmington). I really look forward to this because I get to eat blueberry dishes
all day and I don't have to cook any of them! I don't get many days like that so I enjoy this one! I'll be set
up with books at the festival so if you're in the area - stop by and say "Hey!".
I wanted to tell you about something that hit me when I was in Raleigh at
the Southern Women's Show. I was cooking on stage and telling everybody how each of my books has a little bit of me
in them. I said, "After reading my books, you will know more about me than a lot of people you know and see everyday."
That statement hit me later (like a lot of things do) and I realized how true that is. When I write my books, I write
like I'm talking to a friend - because I am. Y'all have shown me that we are all friends - connected together
by traditions, memories and the love of spending time with our families.
I guess friends are like recipes...you can never have too many!!!
Take a minute today to say "Hey!" to someone you know or don't know -
making someone else feel special is a gift that we receive as we give it.
That's it for me this month. Take Care!
Stay safe, healthy and happy!

May 1, 2007
Hey y'all! May is such a great time of year...the weather is getting warmer, the flowers
are blooming- I love it!
I'm packing up for the Southern Women's Show in Raleigh
this weekend. I'll be cooking on the stage and have a booth. I just can't wait - these shows are so much fun and I
love meeting all the folks that come by. If you are in the area, please drop in and say "Hey!" and of course, you know
I'll be feeding everybody in sight! For more information, go to http://www.southernshows.com/wra/?show_features=1&cat_id=215 .
A dear friend of mine, Amanda B., told me about trying
to feed her youngest son. He's 5 and a picky eater, so she has to get creative some days just to get him to eat a descent
meal...I love this story, so I wanted to share (she said I could!).
While in the car one day during lunch time, she thought she would just pull up
to McDonald's and order lunch. She knew her son would not eat hamburgers, but she really did want him to eat something
other than french fries - so, she told him that she would order him a Krabby Patty (like Spongebob, his favorite cartoon character
eats). When she pulled up to order, she knew that ordering a Krabby Patty at McDonald's would cause confusion in the
kitchen, so she told her son that the code name for Krabby Patty is "hamburger" and that the people inside had been trained
to prepare Krabby Patties when this was ordered. He now loves "Krabby Patties" and she doesn't worry as much
when they are traveling and have to stop for fast food.
I think I like this story so much because it shows the lengths we will go to to
make sure everyone eats. I'm not calling it "lying", just being "creative". I have been known to tell Jake (also
age 5) that pork chops come from a special part of the chicken - so he would eat dinner.
Is there a bigger show of love than making sure that someone is fed? Remember
when we were little and our parents would say "Open up, here comes the airplane" with a spoonful of food ready to "fly" into
our mouths? As parents, we all feel the need to feed - that may be dinner or it may be a needed hug, but we all
share this desire to comfort our loved ones with whatever they need. Isn't it funny that "feeding" their needs, fulfills
our own.
Well y'all, that's it for me this month. Take care and "feed" someone you
love today if not with a meal then with a note or a phone call.
Stay safe, healthy and happy!
I'll "talk" to you soon.
With Love, Lisa

I hope everyone is doing well. Everything is crazy around here - the
"end of the schoolyear" activities are keeping everybody running. I just wanted to take a moment to say "Hey!".
I've been working on the next book - it's being proofread right this minute. I'll let
you know when it is expected in. I don't have the cover finished yet, but I can't wait 'til you see it!

April 30, 2007
I just wanted to drop everybody a note to say "It was wonderful to meet you
all at the Southern Women's Show in Raleigh this past weekend.". I cooked on stage once a day at the show and I had
the best crowds of folks you've ever seen. The folks in the Raleigh area really seem to "get" me and my whole reason
for writing cookbooks. They understand how important meals at home are to me and they want that for their families,
too. I can't wait to go back next year!
The Southern Women's Show in Charlotte is coming up in September - so y'all be on the lookout
for that!

April 19, 2007
I was recently asked to speak to a group from the local Council on Aging in
Mayodan, NC. I was welcomed in the door with opened arms. It was such a pleasure to meet each and everyone
of them (about 40 people).
Many of the folks listen to my radio show and felt like they knew me already and that's the
way I want everyone to feel. If you read or hear my recipes, then you do know me, how I cook and what I feel is important.
This group understood my concern about family's not taking the time to sit down for dinner together.
For many of them, times were different when they were raising their families. Going out to eat was not an everyday option
and they still enjoy the memories of times with their families gathered together around the kitchen table.
My wish for you is: to make today a wonderful memory for tomorrow. Don't be too busy to
realize that now is just as important as tomorrow.
Y'all Take Care & I'll talk to you soon.

March 21, 2007
I just wanted to drop a note and say "Welcome" to all of the new folks to my
site. I have an ad running in the Spring Edition of Taste of the South magazine that will be on the stands March 27
and because of this ad, I've talked to lots of people who weren't familiar with me or my books. I want everyone to know
that if you ever have any questions or just want to chat...drop me an email or give me a call. If I can help, I'm more
than glad to.
I do suggest to everyone to sign up for my newsletter. I promise I won't send any
junk. I do send the recipes that I use during the month on my radio show. I know that not everyone is in the listening
area, but I do want to share with everyone and it's a good way to keep us all in touch.
To me, the folks that read my books are instant friends.
So again..."Welcome!"

I have been hard at work this month on the New Edition of "From Our Home to Yours". It's
at the publisher's now and should be in sometime in April. I've designed a new cover for the book (you can see it on
my homepage). I wanted it to be the same, but different. I wanted it to look enough like the first edition that people
who already have it recognize it and different enough to look like a new edition. The recipes are the same, but I have
wanted to add a note with each one to tell you something about it, where it came from or what to serve it with. I like
that when I read a cookbook and from the overwelming response over "Gritslickers" (my second book), y'all do, too.
I want to thank everyone who has signed up for my monthly newsletter and urge those of you who
haven't to drop me an email and I'll add you on. It is so much fun to send and I love the emails that come in from
everyone. I'm so glad y'all are enjoying the recipes in the newsletters and if you haven't written, I'd love to hear
from you, too.
Special thanks to the Greensboro News & Record's Carl Wilson for the very nice update about
my "Fat Little Crockin' Cookbook". The loyal readers of that paper have been calling and ordering ever since the story
ran. Thank you to all!
Well, better run. I'm testing recipes for the next book (always!!) and it's time to pull dinner
out of the oven.

January 22, 2006
Well,
January has been a busy month! I spent two weekends in Greensboro for the Fishing Expo and the RV Show and as always,
I had a wonderful time meeting and feeding everyone who came by!
I'm
staying home for a while to get some work done on the new edition of "From Our Home to Yours". I've learned a lot since
writing my first book and now I know that y'all enjoy the notes and stories about the recipes about as much as I enjoy telling
them! I'm hoping the book will be ready by March - I'll be sure to let you know when it comes in.
To recieve the recipes from my radio show "Cooking with Lisa" on WLOE/WMYN...sign up for my newsletter and I'll send
you the recipes that I use on the air every month. Click loopi3@earthlink.net just say "newsletter" in your email and I'll add you on!

December 27, 2006
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. We sure did. We all decided to
only buy gifts for the children of the family and it was wonderful to watch the delight on their faces.
Of course, we had some great food... instead of traditional holiday food, we had steaks,
stuffed baked potatoes, spinach dip and veggies, peanut butter fudge, turtle bars, macaroni and cheese, etc. We really
go all out at Thanksgiving so for Christmas, we change it up a bit.
I'm really excited about being at the Fishing Expo in Greensboro January 5-7.
I've never done such a show and I can't wait to see everybody. If you've ever seen me at a show, you know how much I
love meeting and talking to everybody! Any suggestions on what I should serve for samples?
Well, I better run. My youngest sure is quiet...that can't be good!

November 30, 2006
I can't tell y'all how much I enjoy hearing from you! I had so many nice notes
sent to me after Thanksgiving letting me know which of my recipes y'all were using and how good they turned out. Thank
you so much!
Two weeks ago, I was in my car right before it was time for me to go on the air for
"Cooking with Lisa" on WLOE/WMYN. I pulled off the road into a gas station parking lot and called into the station.
I was live from my car and after my segment, I turned the radio back on. A lady had called in and told Mike Moore that
she had something to say about that Lisa Shively...well, I didn't know if that would be good or bad so I listened closely.
The lady went on to thank me for collecting and sharing my recipes so that more people could eat more meals at home.
She has all of my books and cooks from them almost every night. She said that her husband is thrilled to be eating at
home more often and to be eating good at home! I sat in my car with my mouth wide open while the caller went
on and on about my books...before she finished, I was crying my eyes out. It just means so much to me to hear that someone
is enjoying and cooking from my books. I hear it a lot when I'm at shows, but for someone to feel so strongly as to
call into the radio station - I could cry right now. So, kind lady ...Thank You. You, and people like you, are
the reason that I write my books! Thank you all for the support and kind words that you are so kind to share
with me.
I'll do my best to keep y'all happy and fed good! With Love, Lisa
November 11, 2006

I want to let y'all know that "From Our Home to Yours" is sold out. I'm working
on a new edition that will be out this spring. I wanted to add notes and stories (like "Gritslickers")...there are so
many great recipes and I wanted to let you know where they came from or what to serve with them. This edition will make
you feel like you have a friend in the kitchen with you! I'll let y'all know when it's ready.
Y'all take care and enjoy all of the holiday fairs! With Love, Lisa

I just got the nicest email that I wanted to share:
"Lisa, It was
a pleasure meeting you at the Blueberry Festival in Burgaw on Saturday. I purchased your “Fat Little Blueberry Cookbook.”
Just wanted you to know I made the blueberry muffin recipe which I think I like better than my grandmother’s recipe
but the recipe that got rave reviews was the blueberry salsa! Thanks! M.
St.Clair".
Thank You! It's
always nice to hear people enjoying my recipes...it lets me know I'm on the right track!
June 25, 2006
I want to thank everyone who came out to the NC Blueberry Festival this weekend. I met so many wonderful
people and ate lots of big, fat blueberries.
As most of you know, I was a judge for the recipe contest - let me tell y'all something...it's a lot harder than
it looks! It's not just about saying which one is the prettiest, and it's not just about saying which one tastes the
best, it's all about saying which one is the best in all categories. There were lots of beautiful and delicious dishes
to taste and everyone who entered had a lot to be proud of. There were so many creative ways to use blueberries in the
dishes and I was amazed at the ways people used them to decorate their entries.
The weather was great...extremely hot and humid...but I always say that we can still have a show if it's hot,
it's the rain that puts a damper on things. The committee members that I talked to said everything went smoothly
with no emergency calls coming in on the radio and everyone was pleased with the entire festival.
If y'all head down that way, stop into Holland's Shelter Creek Restaurant out on Hwy 53. They have some
of the best Cajun Catfish and Shrimp I have every had. Tell 'em I said "Hey". I promise, you'll be glad you made
this little trip.
So do you think that I'll be back next year? Oh yeah! I wouldn't miss it for the world. Burgaw,
y'all are my kinda people! Take Care.
With Love, Lisa
